Gratitude
Wow, what a remarkable journey it has been!
Embarking on this MDes Degree has truly been a transformative experience, surpassing my wildest expectations. These past eighteen months have marked a profound period of growth and self-actualisation. I am deeply grateful and would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Aaron Fry and the entire staff at the design school for their unwavering support, invaluable guidance, mentorship, and approachability. The design school at the University of Auckland is undoubtedly a special place, and I am privileged to be a part of it.
Although the program is still in its infancy, I see immense potential for it to redefine what it means to deliver a design education and perhaps even revolutionize the way education is delivered in University. You guys are brewing up something very special.
First and foremost, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Diana Albarran Gonzalez for introducing me to the captivating world of design during my first semester. Your unwavering support and encouragement paved the way for my subsequent growth. I am also deeply grateful to Allan Fowler for his down-to-earth nature and approachable demeanor. Whenever I sought guidance, you were always there as a source of wisdom and support. As I reflect on my second semester, I want to extend special thanks to Nick Konings for his exceptional guidance in my Des 707 paper. Your humility as an academic has left a lasting impression on me. You have inspired me in countless ways and encouraged me to pursue my dreams relentlessly. I am grateful for your emphasis on literature and reflective writing, which has played a pivotal role in my personal and academic development. Ayla Hoeta and Xin Cheng, as the first teaching staff I had the privilege of working with, I am indebted to you for making the transition into teaching such a seamless experience. Your belief in my abilities and the importance you placed on my voice made me feel valued and diminished any doubts or imposter syndrome that I may have had as I ventured into this new realm of teaching. I would also like to express my gratitude to Angus Donald Campbell, the head of the school. The opportunities you have made available to me have been nothing short of extraordinary. Thank you for your humility, approachability, and for granting me the chance to teach at the university.
I also want to thank Krishna, Hans, Gerbrand, Gerrard, Jamie, Gabi, Louise, Lizzie, Simiao, Barbara, Flic, Yushayne, Jingru, Humza, Nazia, Camilla, Baptiste, and all the faculty members who have each imparted invaluable lessons, contributing significantly to my personal growth.
Last but certainly not least, my deepest appreciation goes to my mentor and supervisor, Aaron Fry. The privilege of receiving your guidance over these eighteen months has been an incredible blessing. Life has a peculiar way of unfolding, and I must admit that during my undergraduate years, I often resented the university for the lack of one-on-one mentorship opportunities. Throughout my life, I have yearned for a mentor, someone to look up to and learn from. Aaron, I am eternally grateful that you have become that person for me. I have gleaned immeasurable knowledge from you, and your unwavering support and encouragement have enabled me to build the self-confidence necessary to pursue my dreams, embrace adversity, and remain resilient in the face of challenges.
I would also like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to my friends and, above all, my family for their unwavering support. I am an extension of my mother and father, a reflection of my sister, and a product of my ancestors, heritage, culture, religion, and people. I carry all of you within me. Every achievement I make is a testament to our collective efforts, for without the love and support I have received throughout my life, I would never have been able to accomplish anything of significance.
As I embark on a new journey moving forward, I am certain there will be many challenges along the way. With unwavering determination, I eagerly look forward to exploring the depths of my potential and discovering just how far I can go.
